I've heard a lot of other wedding photographers mention that they never work with their friends and family as clients, and I had always thought of it as something that I should probably have a rule about as well. As my business has grown, and my love of what I do has grown even stronger, I admit I have a hard time imagining a friend that I wouldn't absolutely LOVE to photograph on their wedding day. So much of my process pre-wedding is about getting to know my clients on a deeper level so that my photos can be authentic to them and their priorities on their wedding day. That authenticity is a huge priority outside of my business as well, so working with any of my friends would just jump-start that journey... I certainly found that to be true of working with Ansley + Julian.
As a bonus, I think having a "fri-endor" relationship with them while they were planning brought us even closer together, and it gave me so much more empathy for all my couples when they're planning! At one point, Ansley emailed me and asked if she, Julian, and I could meet up to talk about wedding things. They had a really uncomfortable experience with their venue, and were considering letting their deposit go in order to get back to a wedding vision that felt more like "them." The decision was tormenting them, not because they didn't think it was the right thing to do, but because the venue had pressured them into thinking that this was how weddings should be, and they felt like they were overreacting. I just tried to remind them that it was their wedding, and they should do whatever the hell they wanted! They wound up finding an absolutely stunning venue up in Evergreen that I had never heard of, and while it was stressful starting over and finding new caterers, alcohol providers, etc they pulled it off without a hitch!!
Ansley is a delightfully off-beat human, and her dress and details reflected that to a T. She wasn't having your traditional long white dress, and found an adorable vintage dress while shopping with her mom in Washington. Julian is one of the most fashion conscious people I know, and he didn't disappoint in a gorgeous linen suit that was this awesome pale green color. They made quite the stunning pair!!
